THE CIMMERIAN

Don is a frequent presence in the new Robert E. Howard journal The Cimmerian, and highly recommends it to anyone who enjoys the writing of the creator of Conan the Barbarian. His contributions so far include:

2004: "Conan the Expensive" (essay), V1n1 (April 2004); a letter in The Lion's Den, V1n2 (June 2004); "'He Was Deadly'" (historical vignette), V1n3 (August 2004); a letter in The Lion's Den, V1n4 (October 2004); "Thirty Years as a Howard Critic (in Twenty Minutes or less)" (speech transcript) plus a letter in The Lion's Den, V1n5 (December 2004)

2005: "Blades of Hell" (poem) and a letter in The Lion's Den, V2n1 (February 2005); plus letters in The Lion's Den, V2n2 (April 2005), V2n3 (June 2005), and V2n5 (October 2005).

2006: A letter in The Lion's Den, V3n1 (January 2006); "The Last of the Baker Kids" (interview) plus a letter in The Lion's Den, V3n3 (March 2006); "COnun and TarZAN" (interview excerpt), V3n6 (June 2006); a letter in The Lion's Den, V3n7 (July 2006); "Ur Gent" (collectible vignette) and a letter in The Lion's Den, V3n8 (August 2006); "'It Is My Desire'" (research essay), V3n8 (September 2006); and "'Robert'll Be Famous Someday'" (interview), V3n10 (October 2006).

2007: A letter in The Lion's Den for the first number of the year, V4n1 (February 2007); and another popping up at the very end in The Lion's Den, V4n6 (December 2007); Don is also prominently featured in the V4 Awards issue, which lauds him for his not one but two 2007 Skull wins (The Black River Award for Special Achievement and The Black Circle Award for Lifetime Achievement to date Don is the youngest guy in the history of Howard Studies to ever snag the latter). That ish also includes a fun article Don penned titled "The New Eidolon on the Block," which favorably compares Don's mighty trio of Cimmerian trophies to a selection of other classic awards Don has on file courtesy of his old pal Fritz Leiber.

You can also find two reviews of Don's Howardian anthology The Barbaric Triumph in V1n2 (June 2004), penned by Richard Lupoff and Robert Weinberg. V1N5 for December 2004 offers a comprehensive retrospective on Don's The Dark Barbarian reaching the 20-year markincluding a battery of the original reviews which greeted this title on its appearance in 1984. And a nice feature on Don and his winning of The Valusian Award for The Barbaric Triumph can be found in the V2 Awards Issue (2005), along with some entertaining commentary on the event by Don himself.
